Best for: Commuters and travellers who want top ANC and rich features
Visit Sony →Sony's 1000X headphones have set the bar for noise cancelling for years. The WH-1000XM6, launched in May 2025, arrived three years after the XM5 and remain Sony's flagship over-ears in 2026. They bring a new QN3 processor, more microphones, a new driver and, importantly for travellers, a folding design again.
This review is based on Sony's specifications, published lab measurements and expert reviews, and owner feedback. The result is clear: the XM6 are among the best all-round noise-cancelling headphones available, though the price and battery life deserve a closer look.
Design and comfort: the best of XM4 and XM5
The XM6 keep the smooth, matte look of the XM5 but bring back folding hinges, which the XM5 dropped. The new hinges are designed to be more durable, and the headphones fold into a slightly smaller carry case that closes with a magnet. Colours at launch were Black, Silver and Midnight Blue.
A wider headband spreads pressure more evenly, and the soft earcups make multi-hour sessions comfortable for most people. At about 254g they are light for full-size headphones. Some reviewers find the earcups a little bulky in appearance, and there is no official water resistance, so keep them away from heavy rain and sweaty workouts.
There are only two physical buttons, one for power and pairing and one for noise control modes, which keeps the design clean. A 3.5mm jack allows wired listening with the included cable, and USB-C handles charging. The overall look is understated, so they work equally well in the office and on the move.
Sony WH-1000XM6 noise cancelling
Noise cancelling is the headline. The QN3 processor manages 12 microphones, four more than the XM5, and continuously adapts to your surroundings. Expert reviewers who compared the XM6 directly with Bose's QuietComfort Ultra headphones rated the two as extremely close, with some giving the Sony a slight edge in side-by-side tests.
Ambient Sound mode has 20 levels, an option to focus on voices, and an automatic mode that adjusts transparency to the noise around you. Cupping your hand over the right earcup quickly lowers the volume so you can hear someone without removing the headphones.
Sound quality
A redesigned 30mm driver and a noise shaper in the QN3 chip aim for cleaner digital-to-analogue conversion. The default tuning is more balanced than earlier Sony flagships, with punchy but controlled bass, clear mids and energetic treble. Detail is strong whether ANC is on or off.
Sony's Sound Connect app offers presets, a Find Your Equalizer tool and a 10-band custom EQ. LDAC supports higher-bitrate Bluetooth on compatible Android phones, and DSEE Extreme upscales compressed streams. A Cinema mode widens the soundstage for films. A few rivals, such as the Bowers and Wilkins Px7 S3, are rated slightly higher by some reviewers for pure musical refinement, but they cannot match the Sony's noise cancelling.
Sound quality holds up well with ANC switched off, which is not true of every noise-cancelling headphone. Films and TV benefit from the wider soundstage, and head-tracked spatial audio is available on some Android phones, though not on Samsung devices or iPhones.
Sony WH-1000XM6 battery life
Sony quotes up to 30 hours with noise cancelling on, the same as the XM5. That is fine for long flights, but some competitors last much longer, and Sennheiser's Momentum 4 Wireless can reach 60 hours. Quick charging is a strength: about three minutes on a USB PD charger gives roughly three hours of playback. You can now also listen while the headphones are charging.
- Up to 30 hours with ANC on
- 3-minute top-up for about 3 hours (USB PD charger)
- Playback while charging supported
- 3.5mm wired listening when the battery runs out
Calls, controls and smart features
Six of the microphones are dedicated to voice pickup, and AI-based noise reduction separates your voice from background sound. Reviewers describe calls as clear, even in busy places. You can mute the mic by double-pressing the NC button.
Touch controls on the right earcup are responsive: swipe and hold to change the volume, double-tap to pause, swipe to skip. Other features include multipoint connection to two devices, wear detection, Speak-to-Chat, head gestures for calls, Adaptive Sound Control and Auracast broadcast audio support.
Sony's app also offers useful extras: Background Music mode, which makes audio sound as if it is playing in another room, a Find Your Equalizer quiz, and the option to prioritise sound quality or connection stability. Firmware updates arrive through the same app.
Sony WH-1000XM6 vs Bose QuietComfort Ultra (2nd Gen)
Both are top picks for noise cancelling. The Sony has a larger app feature set, LDAC, excellent touch controls and a folding case. The Bose is a touch lighter, arguably more comfortable for very long wear, supports aptX Adaptive and lossless USB-C audio, and has a more energetic sound. Choose Sony for features and tuning flexibility, Bose for comfort and immersive audio.
Are the Sony WH-1000XM6 worth it?
If you fly, commute or work in noisy spaces, the XM6 are an excellent investment and should serve you for years. Budget-conscious buyers can still get great results from the discounted WH-1000XM5, but the XM6's better ANC, folding design and calls justify the upgrade for most new buyers.
