Visit Royal Dutch Gazelle →Gazelle is one of the oldest bike makers in the Netherlands, and the Ultimate C380 is its premium low-maintenance city and trekking e-bike. It pairs a Gates carbon belt with an Enviolo stepless hub, so there is no chain to oil and no derailleur to adjust, and adds a Bosch Smart System mid-drive, suspension front and rear, and full commuting equipment. The 2026 range uses Bosch's latest motors and batteries and won an iF Design Award 2026. In the US it is sold as the Ultimate C380+, a faster Class 3 version.
This Gazelle Ultimate C380 review is based on Gazelle's specifications, published reviews and owner feedback. We cover the ride, the drive system, battery and range, maintenance and value.
Design and comfort
The C380 uses an aluminium frame with the battery, motor and cables neatly integrated. It comes in Low-Step and High-Step shapes and a wide range of sizes, from XS to XXL in the UK. Its geometry is slightly sporty but still upright, with a low centre of gravity that reviewers describe as very stable.
Comfort is a highlight. An SR Suntour Mobie 34 air fork with 80 mm of travel and lockout, a suspension seatpost, a gel saddle, wide Schwalbe Green Marathon tyres and Ergon ergonomic grips all soak up rough roads. The adjustable stem lets you fine-tune your riding position, and you can mount a phone to it using SP Connect. Owners often mention how smooth and relaxed long rides feel.
Motor and performance
In Europe and the UK, the C380 uses Bosch's Performance Line PX motor, which Gazelle rates at 85 to 90 Nm. Gazelle says some models can unlock up to 90 Nm through the Bosch Flow app. That is a lot of torque for a city bike and makes hills, headwinds and heavy loads much easier. Assist is capped at 25 km/h, with Eco, Tour, Auto and Turbo modes and a walk-assist function.
The US Ultimate C380+ uses Bosch's Performance Line Sport motor with 85 Nm and assists up to 28 mph, making it a Class 3 speed bike for longer suburban commutes. On all versions, Bosch's Smart System reacts to your pedalling for smooth, responsive power.
Belt drive and stepless shifting
The Gates CDX carbon belt is quiet, clean and long-lasting. It doesn't need oil, doesn't rust and won't leave grease on your trousers. The Enviolo Trekking hub replaces fixed gears with a continuously variable range, so you twist the shifter to make pedalling easier or harder, even when stopped at traffic lights.
The trade-off is efficiency. Hub gears like the Enviolo lose a little more energy than a well-maintained derailleur, and the gear range may feel narrower on long, steep climbs. With 85 to 90 Nm of motor support, most riders won't notice. For more gear range, Gazelle sells the Ultimate T11+ with an 11-speed derailleur.
Gazelle Ultimate C380 battery and range
Battery options depend on the market. The UK C380 lists 540, 600 and 800 Wh Bosch batteries integrated in the down tube, while the US C380+ comes with 540 Wh. Gazelle's own UK estimates for the 600 Wh battery range from about 44 miles (70 km) in Turbo to about 109 miles (175 km) in Eco, and the 800 Wh version adds more. For the faster US model, Gazelle quotes up to about 65 miles on 540 Wh.
Charging a 600 Wh battery takes about 5.5 hours with Bosch's 4A charger. The battery can be removed to charge indoors. Real-world range will be lower in cold weather, with a heavy load or at high assist.
Equipment, brakes and maintenance
The C380 is ready for daily use. It comes with an aluminium MIK HD rear rack, Herrmans front and Spanninga rear lights powered by the main battery, an Axa ring lock that accepts a plug-in cable, a chain guard and a kickstand. Shimano MT420 four-piston hydraulic disc brakes with 180 mm and 160 mm rotors give strong stopping, even when loaded. The UK model uses Bosch's colour Kiox 500 display, while the US C380+ has the compact Purion 200.
Maintenance is where it shines. With a belt, an enclosed hub and hydraulic brakes, routine care is mostly checking tyre pressure and brake pads. Gazelle offers a 10-year frame warranty, 5 years on paint and fork, and 2 years on the battery, motor and display.
Is the Gazelle Ultimate C380 worth it?
The Ultimate C380 is premium-priced and heavy. Gazelle lists about 27 kg, so it isn't a bike to carry up stairs. In return you get a strong motor, a big battery, excellent comfort and a drivetrain that barely needs attention, all built to last. US buyers should note it has been discounted at times.
It's worth it if you ride every day in all weather and don't want to maintain a chain. If you need a light bike to lift, a lightweight model like the Specialized Turbo Vado SL 2 fits better.
- Buy it if: you commute daily and want a comfortable, near-maintenance-free bike
- Skip it if: you need to carry your bike or want the lightest option
