Dyson V16 Piston Animal

A powerful, feature-packed flagship with a brilliant dust-compressing bin and long battery life, but its pointed floorhead and mixed test results mean older Dysons remain strong value.

What we like

  • +Dyson's highest-rated suction at 315 AW
  • +Up to 70 minutes of runtime and swappable batteries
  • +CleanCompaktor bin compresses dust and empties cleanly
  • +Conical brush bars resist long-hair tangles
  • +Release the floorhead without bending down
  • +Whole-machine HEPA filtration and particle-counting display

What could be better

  • −Tapered floorhead makes front-on edge cleaning awkward
  • −Did worse than the V15 Detect and Gen5detect in one side-by-side test
  • −Heavy at about 3.4 kg
  • −New tool mount isn't compatible with older Dyson attachments
  • −Mixed owner ratings on Dyson's own site

Best for: Large homes with long hair and pets

The Dyson V16 Piston Animal is Dyson's flagship cordless stick vacuum. It launched in the UK and Australia in September 2025 and reached the US in 2026, where Dyson lists it as its latest technology alongside the older Gen5detect and V15 Detect. It brings a new motor rated at 315 AW, a bin with a built-in compactor, a redesigned floorhead with conical brush bars, quick-release attachments and app connectivity.

This Dyson V16 review is based on Dyson's specifications, published hands-on reviews and owner ratings. We cover suction, battery life, the new floorhead and bin, and whether the V16 is worth it over the V15 Detect.

Design: what the Piston name means

The 'Piston' is a lever on the bin. Push it down and it compresses dust and hair to fit more in. Dyson says the bin can hold up to 30 days of debris. Push it again to empty, and the smooth inner wall is wiped clean, so you don't have to pull hair out by hand. Reviewers call this the V16's best new feature.

A red cuff at the top of the wand releases the floorhead without bending, and the head's docking point sits upright so you can reattach it from a standing position. Two small crevice tools are built into the machine and wand. The downside is that the new connection means older Dyson tools don't fit.

At about 3.4 kg it is heavy for a cordless vacuum, though a padded grip and matte finish help. It uses a power button instead of a trigger, which is easier on long cleans but less handy for quick pickups. One reviewer's shorter colleague also found it too tall to use comfortably.

The new conical floorhead

The All Floor Cones Sense head uses two cone-shaped brush bars. The tapered shape pushes long hair toward the narrow end and into the suction path, and Dyson says it handles hair up to 63 cm (25 in). It mixes nylon bristles for carpet with soft fibres for hard floors, adjusts suction and brush speed to the floor type, and has a central light that shows fine dust.

In practice, reviewers saw no tangling with human or dog hair. Dyson's older heads were already good at this, though, and large clumps of long synthetic hair could still get stuck. The bigger complaint is shape: the front edge comes to a slight point instead of a straight line, so you can't push it straight into a wall or under a desk edge. You have to approach from the side. The head also felt a little harder to push than older Dysons.

Suction and cleaning performance

Dyson rates the V16 at up to 315 AW, its highest figure for a stick vacuum, backed by an extra set of cyclones that switches on in Boost. The dust sensor counts particles up to 15,000 times per second, adjusts power automatically and shows what you've picked up on the LCD screen, now using a simple traffic-light colour scale.

In everyday cleaning, TechRadar found the suction excellent across carpet and hard floors in a home with a dog. Its controlled tests were less flattering. On tile, the V16 pushed oats around instead of picking them up. In a side-by-side test with the Gen5detect and V15 Detect, it was the only one of the three to leave a strip of fine tea behind, even in Boost. The reviewer blamed the floorhead rather than the motor. On carpet it did well, and debris along room edges was handled well when approached from the side.

Dyson V16 battery life and charging

Dyson claims up to 70 minutes in Eco mode, matching the Gen5detect and among the longest runtimes available. In Boost, one test ran for just under 17 minutes. Most people will use Auto mode, which balances power and runtime. Charging takes about 3.5 hours, an hour less than the two older flagships.

The seven-cell battery clicks in and out, so you can buy a spare and swap it mid-clean. That also helps the vacuum last longer, since the battery is usually the first part to wear out.

App, filtration and extras

The V16 is Dyson's first cordless vacuum designed for full MyDyson app control, with promised cleaning summaries and settings such as toggling the light. At launch, one reviewer found no settings available yet, so treat app features as a work in progress that depends on updates. Filtration is a sealed five-stage HEPA system that Dyson says captures 99.99% of particles down to 0.1 micron.

The Hair screw tool 2.0 adds a rubber strip for pulling hair from upholstery. A Submarine version adds a wet-cleaning floorhead, and bundles with Dyson's floor dock and auto-empty dock are also sold.

Owner opinion is split. When we checked Dyson's US store, it showed an average of 3.9 out of 5 from about 2,700 ratings, with 51% of reviewers saying they would recommend it.

Is the Dyson V16 worth it?

The V16 is premium-priced, though Dyson has priced it close to or below the Gen5detect in some regions. You get the best bin in any Dyson, long runtime, a swappable battery and good hair handling. The pointed floorhead and mixed test results keep it from being an easy recommendation.

For homes with lots of long hair, pets and large floor areas, it's a strong choice. If you mainly want the best pickup for the money, a discounted V15 Detect or Gen5detect still cleans at least as well in published tests.

  • Buy it if: you want easy, hygienic bin emptying and long runtime
  • Skip it if: you clean lots of edges head-on or want the lightest stick vacuum

Frequently asked questions

Is the Dyson V16 Piston Animal the newest Dyson cordless vacuum?

+

Yes. Dyson lists the V16 Piston Animal as its latest flagship cordless vacuum in 2026, above the Gen5detect and V15 Detect. It launched in the UK and Australia in September 2025 and in the US in 2026.

How long does the Dyson V16 battery last?

+

Dyson claims up to 70 minutes in Eco mode. In Boost mode, one published test measured just under 17 minutes. Charging takes about 3.5 hours, and the battery can be swapped for a spare.

Dyson V16 vs V15 Detect: which is better?

+

The V16 has more rated suction, a dust-compressing bin, anti-tangle cones, longer runtime and a quick-release head. The V15 Detect has a straight-edged laser head and cleaned better in one side-by-side test, and it usually costs less.

How heavy is the Dyson V16 Piston Animal?

+

It weighs about 3.4 kg (7.5 lb), which is heavy for a cordless stick vacuum. A padded grip helps, but people who want a lighter machine may prefer a slimmer model.

Do old Dyson attachments fit the V16?

+

No. The V16 uses a new connection system that lets you release tools without bending down, so attachments from older Dyson stick vacuums aren't compatible.

What is the Dyson V16 Piston Animal Submarine?

+

It is the same vacuum bundled with a Submarine wet-cleaning floorhead for mopping hard floors. It costs more than the standard V16 Piston Animal.

The Dyson V16 Piston Animal is Dyson's most advanced cordless vacuum, and some of its new ideas are excellent: the compacting bin, the no-bend head release and the swappable long-life battery. The conical floorhead fixes a problem most owners didn't have while creating a new one at room edges, and independent tests don't show a clear cleaning gain over older flagships. Buy it for its convenience features and long runtime. If raw pickup per pound or euro matters most, a discounted V15 Detect or Gen5detect remains a smart choice.
