Apple Watch SE 3 launched in September 2025 and remains Apple's entry-level watch in 2026, now sold alongside the Series 12 and Ultra 4. It fixes the biggest weakness of the SE line by adding an always-on display, and it uses the same S10 chip as Apple's pricier watches.

Based on Apple's specifications, expert reviews and owner feedback, this review looks at what the SE 3 gets right, what it leaves out, and who should buy it instead of a Series model.

Design and comfort

The SE 3 keeps the classic Apple Watch look, with 40mm and 44mm aluminium cases that are 10.7mm thick and weigh about 26g and 33g. Colours are limited to Midnight and Starlight. The bezels are thicker than on the Series models, and the screen does not curve to the edges, but most buyers will not mind given the price.

You still get the Digital Crown with haptic feedback and the side button, and the SE 3 works with the same bands as other Apple Watches in matching sizes. Apple says the Ion-X front glass is four times more crack-resistant than before.

Straps attach with Apple's quick-release system, and a huge range of official and third-party bands lets you change the look for sport, work or evenings. The 40mm size fits wrists from about 130 to 200mm, and the 44mm size fits about 140 to 245mm.

Always-on display

The LTPO OLED display now stays on when your wrist is down, dimming and slowing its refresh rate so you can see the time and complications at a glance. Peak brightness is 1,000 nits and it can drop to 2 nits in the dark. Reviewers call this the single most important upgrade, especially for glancing at the time in meetings or during workouts.

Performance and everyday features

The S10 chip is the same processor used in Apple's higher-end watches, so apps open quickly and watchOS feels fluid. It enables on-device Siri, double tap and wrist flick gestures, and 64GB of storage for music and podcasts.

A built-in speaker plays media and handles calls. Apple Pay, Find My, Emergency SOS, Fall Detection, Crash Detection and Check In are all included. Cellular models support 5G through RedCap technology.

The latest watchOS brings Workout Buddy coaching on supported iPhones, smart stack widgets that surface useful information, and the new Siri powered by Apple Intelligence in supported languages. Family Setup lets parents set up an SE 3 with cellular for a child who does not have an iPhone.

Apple Watch SE 3 health and fitness features

The SE 3 covers the essentials well: heart-rate tracking with high and low alerts, irregular rhythm notifications, sleep stages and the new Sleep Score, and a temperature sensor that improves cycle tracking with retrospective ovulation estimates. Workout tools include custom workouts, heart-rate zones, Training Load, running form metrics, VO2 max estimates and a Pacer for races.

What you do not get is an ECG app or blood oxygen measurement, and hypertension notifications remain a Series and Ultra feature. Reviewers who compared the SE 3 with Apple's flagship watches found workout, sleep and heart-rate results closely matched.

  • Included: heart-rate alerts, sleep score, temperature sensing, VO2 max
  • Included: Fall Detection, Crash Detection, Emergency SOS
  • Not included: ECG, blood oxygen, hypertension notifications

Apple Watch SE 3 battery life and charging

Apple quotes up to 18 hours of normal use and up to 32 hours in Low Power Mode. In practice, reviewers found it lasts a full day including sleep tracking, but you will charge it daily. Fast charging is new to the SE: Apple says 0 to 80% takes about 45 minutes with a compatible adapter, and 15 minutes gives up to 8 hours of use. One reviewer found a full charge from empty closer to an hour.

SE 3 vs Series 12 and SE 2

Compared with the SE 2, the SE 3 adds the always-on display, a much faster chip, fast charging, a temperature sensor, a speaker for media, 5G and sleep score. That makes it a big upgrade. Compared with the Series 12, you give up the larger edge-to-edge screen, thinner design, ECG, blood oxygen and extra premium features, but save a considerable amount.

Is the Apple Watch SE 3 worth it?

For first-time Apple Watch buyers, teens, older relatives and anyone who wants reliable fitness and safety features without paying flagship prices, the SE 3 is the one to get. It requires an iPhone 11 or later on the latest iOS. If you need ECG or blood oxygen data, or longer battery life, step up to a Series or Ultra model.

The GPS + Cellular version is worth considering if you want to leave your phone at home during runs or walks while still making calls, streaming music and receiving messages. It requires a compatible carrier plan.
